What Are The Different Types Of Signboards?

Designed by an experienced sign maker, a signboard organizes and displays accurate information about the product or service. It has many names and variations: such as feature cards, elevator pitch, core value proposition, and even a billboard. However, regardless of the different names or appearance, a signboard communicates the value of a product to its audience.

Types of Signboards

There are different types of signboards, including:

1. Roadside Sign Boards

They are used to indicate a specific destination, provide information about facilities and services, or inform traffic regulations within the visual range of road users. There are two kinds of roadside signboards, 'Information Sign Boards' and 'Warning Sign Boards.'

  • The Information Sign Boards include all those signs used to give information about different places' distance, time, and location. There is no negative impact on the road users with moving traffic.

  • The Warning Sign Boards include signs conveying safety-related messages concerning immediate danger, prohibition, or restriction. These include junction ahead signals, stop lines and pedestrian crossing signboards, etc.

2. Guide Sign Boards (GSBs)

GSBs are used to guide the road users towards a destination and inform them about facilities available nearby along the travel route such as hotels, restaurants, petrol pumps, etc. They indicate the direction/ locations of places like cities, districts, states, and towns. There are three kinds of guide signboards: ' Reference Sign Boards,' 'Information/ Instructional Sign Boards,' and 'Warning Sign Boards.'

  • The Reference Signs include all those signs that reference the location of a city district or other place.

  • The Information/ Instructional Sign Boards include all those signs which give specific information about places along the highway like tourist centers, museums, historical monuments, etc.

  • The Warning Signs include all those signs used to alert road users about dangers or obstacles ahead and alert them to take certain precautions for safe travel.

3. Directional Sign Boards (DSBs)

DSBs are used to give direction to road users. They indicate the directions left (L), right (R), and straight ahead (A), which could be followed. Example: L to R; Right Turn, Straight Ahead, etc.

4. Railway Sign Boards

They are used to indicate the locations of railway stations/ crossings, names of trains, etc., and convey safety-related messages like fog signal is on; caution when crossing gates, do not cross tracks except at a level crossing, etc.

5. Warning Sign Boards

These signs are used to convey safety-related messages concerning immediate danger, prohibition, or restriction. These include junction ahead signs, stop lines and pedestrian crossing signboards, etc.

6. Exit Sign Boards (ESBs)

(ESBs) indicate the exit which lies ahead along with distance in Kms, minutes and seconds of travel for a faster approach by the road users. They also inform about places to be visited while coming from other cities or states.

The Sign Boards are an essential instrument for guidance and information to the road users, particularly on the Highways.
