The 6 Common Materials Used For Signages Explained

Updated: Feb 9, 2023

Choosing the right signage material can be tricky because there is a wide range of selections. The difference in a sign may lie in its actual materials. Each material has specific features and benefits that can make it perfect for a particular situation. Let's take a closer look at the six common materials used for signages.

1. Foamboard

Foamboards are excellent temporary signages with a wooden layer to keep them from warping and is incredibly lightweight, making them extremely easy to move around. It is not recommended for outdoor use because it can easily dent when exposed to a harsh environment. You can use foamboards at events such as trade shows, corporate events, and press conferences, and it can also be printed double-sided to maximize awareness.

2. Aluminum

Aluminum is one of the best materials for outdoor use because it is rust and waterproof; it can also come in various colors. It is a flexible material, though, so an exterior sign may warp from high wind pressure. You can also use it indoors if you aim for an industrial look. This material is strong and sturdy and is typically used as building signs and retail storefront signs.

3. Acrylic

Acrylic may also be referred to as plexiglass. Acrylic signs and lightboxes can withstand high heat and chemicals, which may damage other types of signs. It is a suitable material for indoor and outdoor use and is commonly used in offices or receptions. Acrylic is a modern signage option for rigid boards because of its transparency.

4. PVC

Polyvinyl chloride, also known as PVC, is common for several applications, including sign designs, and are best suited for short-term outdoor use such as sporting events and festivals. It is a lightweight and rigid plastic material. One of its distinctive attributes is that it is incredibly repellant to moisture. This material is also resistant to various weather types, such as wind and rain.

5. Self-adhesive Vinyl

These can be used to create bright, colorful, and creative designs. They are adhesive and can be applied directly to walls, and can be used for internal branding and wayfinding. The main advantage of self-adhesive vinyl is that they are exceptionally versatile. SAVs can be applied on any surface and will look amazing. You can also use SAVs on the floor, such as concrete, carpet, tiles, floorboard, and road.

6. MDO

MDO or Medium Density Overlay is made of plywood panels with a resin fiber fused to the panel's surface. It is commonly used in sign designs due to its robust material. Since it is made of wood, it may be prone to warping after several years. The overlay practically eliminates surface checking and looks better long after painting.
